As the saying goes ‘money makes the world go round’ but believe it or not it is not one of the main motivators for your staff. I recently ran a session with one of my clients as they wanted to get ideas of how they could motivate their teams. Of all the ideas we came up with, money did not feature, because at the end of the day it is not always about the cold hard cash!

Five ways to get the most out of your teams:

Work life balance is still a priority and when this is incorporated in the way you reward and recognise your team it gives you a much more holistic approach to the way you look after them.

From the five elements below write down how you currently operate and you will see instantly the areas you may need to give more attention to:

Flexibility – Have you considered cross training, job rotation, or job enrichment activities so team members have more variety in their work and can help one another out when you are short staffed? Cross exposure will give your team members the opportunity to appreciate one another’s roles and working environments.

Time Off – Give team members days off for important occasions to them such as their birthday so they can spend valuable time with their friends and family. Giving additional days holidays for when they have really gone above and beyond.

Resources – ensuring your team have resources that work so they can carry out their job more efficiently will make their job more enjoyable and remove some of the everyday niggles that can become stressful day in, day out. If things need improving encourage your team to come up with suggestions, as they are in the operation and will know what the daily frustrations are.

Challenge to grow – give your team members individual projects that work to their strengths. They will feel appreciated and enjoy the additional responsibility.

Appreciation and acknowledgement – saying thank you goes a long way, so celebrate success and organise team socials.

By working on the above you will be rewarding and recognising your team as you get the best out of them. To makes things even more interesting you can use all of this to turn it in to a game.

When rewarding staff you need to remember the following:
People love to collect things
Peer to peer recognition is important
Points mean prizes
Make it fun, have a competitive element.

When working with my client we brought all these elements together and turned it into a giant board game which would be displayed on their Wall of Success. Photos of the team members would be used to mark their places on the board and as they progressed they would collect different rewards or prizes.
