Battling the Recruitment Crisis

With the Brexit deal on the table the impacts of this are already being felt throughout the hospitality industry. It is time to take our heads out of the sand and take action to combat the recruitment crisis that is hitting us. Many hoteliers and restaurateurs are grumbling about not being able to recruit, so what are we doing about it?

Quick wins that some operators have put in place:
– Flexible working hours
– Increase in pay
– 4 day working week

Although these measures are only for short term gain. There needs to be stability. People don’t like change, employees don’t like uncertainty and are the first to leave a ‘sinking ship’. Which is why unfortunately a lot of our migrant talent have deserted us.

What we really need to be doing is educating our teachers, career advisers, parents, employees, customers and the government of what a great industry hospitality is and the career progression that is available. We need to keep on shouting about this.

We currently only have one hotel in the UK that is run by students – Wivenhoe House in conjunction with the Edge Hotel School. Why are there not more hotels working with universities to give both practical experience and degree qualifications using this model? The traditional classroom degree programmes are no longer attracting people in to our industry and universities are closing down courses due to lack of numbers.

This is why we need to focus on growing our talent closer to home. The new Apprenticeship hospitality standards are now in place and Apprentices that have been trained up are being independently End Point Assessed and gaining their Apprenticeship, setting them up for a great hospitality career.

As an Independent Assessor I have seen the talent that is in our industry. We need to keep nurturing this. Apprenticeships are not just for entry level jobs, they are for anyone 16 years or over which means more mature adult workers, and career changers can undertake an Apprenticeship. Managers can undertake Degree Apprenticeships which are becoming more available.

Having the work experience to gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to work in our industry gives us an all rounded employee. That is the beauty of Apprenticeships. Your employees get paid as they work for you and get the qualifications they need to progress. Progression in our industry is fast paced. We are also fortunate enough to have a plethora of organisations that will help people with their hospitality career whatever their background or situation.

To spread the passion for our industry read ‘Star Quality Talent – Inspiring Hospitality Careers’, and give a copy to your MP, your child’s school teacher, your neighbour and let’s educate people on how great this industry really is. Let’s keep the art of hospitality alive.
