Creating opportunities for all

Monica Or, columnist and Hospitality Consultant at Star Quality Hospitality Consultancy discusses working in hospitality is not just a summer job, it is a route to a rewarding career..

As school leavers are receiving their GCSE and A level results, many young adults will be making life changing decisions as they start on their career journeys. Some may be unsure of where it may lead, and many will start off taking a summer job working in our industry as they figure out what they want to do. Although what many do not realise is that working in hospitality should not be treated as a summer job as it is the route to a rewarding career.

Many CEOs, Managing Directors and top hospitality professionals started their careers in the pot wash, waiting on tables, or cleaning rooms. It was through those initial experiences of our industry that ignited their passion and drive for an industry that has enabled them to work in many different sectors, and travel the world, if they chose to.

The secret of working in the hospitality industry is that not only does it give you transferable skills, but it also teaches the all important life skills, that many other professions neglect. It offers training at every stage of your career, it gives countless opportunities, it opens doors, it gives connections, it is all inclusive and culturally diverse.

Working in hospitality is much more than having a job. It is about meeting people from all walks of life, working with people from all over the world, making life long friends and that’s just the team that you will be working with.

Whatever job you take in the hospitality industry. Every day you will get instant satisfaction from your service delivery as you help someone in need, create something from scratch, transform spaces, and create memories.

No matter what walk of life you come from, the hospitality industry always has it’s doors open and welcomes everyone. Whether you have just left school, graduated from college, are returning to work from a career break, have fallen on hard times, or you are an ex-offender. There is an entry route that will suit your circumstance.

Hospitality employers are crying out to find great workers that are passionate, enthused, willing and able. Hospitality is the 4th largest industry in the UK with positions available.

Now is the time to shout about how great our industry is and welcome those that want to venture through our doors. Who do you know that is brave enough to embark on an adventure that will have many twists and turns, but ultimately wherever it takes them, it will lead to a rewarding career in hospitality?
