Hilton London Metropole: Meet the GM of Hilton London Metropole

GM of Hilton London Metropole, Avner On, explains to hotel-industry.co.uk that holding a General Manager post is not just a job; it’s a lifestyle.

Meet the GM:

  • Name: Avner On
  • Property: Hilton London Metropole
  • Number of rooms: 1054

Hotel-industry.co.uk: How did you begin your career as a hotelier?

On: My first professional role in the hotel industry was Assistant Manager at Twelve Tribes Restaurant at Tel Aviv Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Israel. Since 1988 I have held numerous General Managers positions across the globe, and have been managing Hilton London Metropole since 2003.

Hotel-industry.co.uk: How would you describe your style of management?

On: Being a General Manager is not just a job, it’s a lifestyle. As a permanent resident of Hilton London Metropole, staff and guests can contact me 24-hours a day, seven days a week. It’s important to always have the channels of communication open.

Hotel-industry.co.uk: What achievements are you most proud of at your current property?

On: Hilton London Metropole recently underwent a full £750,000 refurbishment of its meeting facilities. This is part of an ongoing programme of upgrades at the hotel that continue throughout 2012 and into 2013. I’m very much looking forward to leading the next stage of refurbishments, which will see the entrance and lobby transformed early next year.

Hotel-industry.co.uk: What keeps you awake at night?

On: With 1054-rooms, Hilton London Metropole is the largest property in my career portfolio and, as one of the largest conference and events hotels in Europe, we’re continuously looking at new ways to overcome challenges and place the hotel ahead of its competitors. Our task is not just to meet, but to exceed the expectations of our guests.

Hotel-industry.co.uk: How is the market changing in your sector and region?

On: The market place is constantly changing, both in terms of market segment and level of demand. The Olympics for example, had a huge impact on demand over the summer – and the leisure and business markets are constantly changing. With this in mind, we need to have our finger on the pulse all the time and identify a change as it happens in order to react immediately.

Avner On’s top three pieces of advice for hoteliers:

  1. Plan for the future and keep up to date with new technology
  2. Look after and support your team members – invest in their growth, give them the tools to perform their duties and prepare for their next role
  3. Listen to your guests and cater to their needs
